It is not responsible to hold a summer camp

30 juni 2020 - Ho Chi Minh-stad, Vietnam

It would have been 2 more weeks before the summer camp in Skibby 2020 started, and even though it looks like the borders with Denmark will open under special rules it is still impossible to keep this year's camp. At first we have had a letter from Frederikssund that the hall will stay closed this summer what stops really everything, this is not only for the camp but also our club

SBK. Beside the fact that the hall is not available there are many other things that makes it impossible to have a camp this year.

In theory you can play badminton again in most of Europe, in practice it is not so easy. In many situations the hall is owned by the community and most of them keep the hall closed for the summer, the hall need to have a large ventilation system, if there are 6 badminton courts you can be in the hall with maximum 12 players and 1 or 2 coaches depending on the space around the courts. You can not use the dressing rooms with more than 2 to 4 people depending on the number of M2, the use of the showers must be limited and it is recommended to shower at home. If the showers and dressing rooms are used they have to be cleaned and disinfected after every time they are used. This alone makes a camp impossible but for a camp the rules are even more strict, you can not sleep in groups like we do at the camp and eating has to be done within 2 meter distance.  All the places where we come have to be cleaned everyday, from the floor to door handles, multi shuttle feeding is not possible, and when playing you have to change the shuttle for every service (everybody needs to have his/her own shuttle). Our camp is personal training for 90% of the time, this means that we have a coach on every court and many times an ass. Coach and a head coach in the hall, so normally we have 6 to 8 coaches in a hall with 6 courts. A camp is a very social happening with very close contact between players and players/coaches, all these rules makes it very asocial and against everything we believe in. If you do the camp seriously you have to keep yourself to the rules so we can have no more than 12 to 14 players at the camp to make the rules work and then it is impossible to organize a camp it will be far too expensive.

What if we say well forget about the rules we just do it the way we used to? Well if everything goes well you are lucky and you may get away with it. If not and someone gets sick you can have a very serious problem, insurance will not cover the costs and you has the organisation will be held responsible. Also the player who gets sick will have to pay the costs of getting back to their home country or have to pay for the stay in Isolation or hospital because the insurance will not cover the costs.

The last two months I have spent a lot of time on this subject and I’m 100 % sure we have made the right decision not to do a camp this year. Let's hope that in 2021 things are normal again if not it may well be the end of badminton camps in the summers.
