SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE SERVICE

9 november 2019 - Đắk Ya, Vietnam

When you have the service you can be for 80% sure you will lose upcoming rally. This is what I told the Indian coach who I was doing analysing training with in our coach education. We have been looking at two talent players from India one U19 and one U15 boy on video, in the whole set we have been watching they only made 3 and 4 points at there own service. Making points at your own service means that when you win the service back (what gives you a point) you have to be able to score one more point after you did your service. The rate is about 20/80%, there is a 20% chance that you make a point but an 80% chance that you lose the rally you play after you own service.

I have explained in an earlier article why this happened and basically  it is because the receiver of the service is a lot more ready to start the rally than the service player is (but read the whole article on http://www.badmintonline.nl). The coach in education would not believe this so we looked at the whole game, and afterwards he was stund about the result and told me he never looked at a game like this before.

What effect should this information have on the tactical instructions a coach should give to his/her player? Well first of all your players should know that when he/she make 2 or 3 times one or two points on their own service they are in a very good position to win the set. It also means that when you have the service you have to be extra focused on playing a save start of the rally (most of the points lost are in the first two strokes). The receiver know that he has an 80% chance to win the rally so he can take a little more risk on the first rally that the server is playing. This will change after the server win his 20% chance and makes a point, then the server should start to take a little more risk to try to force a second point. The receiver should do the opposite and try to play save. When it is game or match point and you have the service you have to play very save has your changes to win the rally are very slim, this was also the case in the game we were analysing  the server lost the match because he had the service. In the whole game we come to the conclusion that both players were not aware of this they were playing the wrong tactic all the time.

No need to say that this was only a small part of the analysing we have been doing beside looking at technical and footwork aspects. I have only been taking out this subject because I was shocked to learn that the coach had never looked at this before and therefore was not aware of what was happening.
