CLUB TRAINING HAVE TO BE DONE DIFFERENT

Club training can and have to be done different

Almost every badminton player knows this routine: Come to the  club evening, do 15 to 20 min warming up, do 1 hour of pri set up practices with the whole groep (double players, single players woman en man all do the same thing). After that they play1 or 2 rounds of games, and maybe a cooling down. This is how training in the club is done for the last 50 years and like most of the things from 50 years ago it is no longer from this time.

Yes you can still do parts of this training today specially with new started players who still have to learn the very basic things and rules but beside that this kind of training should not be done anymore.

If you only have two hours club training and spending 15 to 20 min on a warming up outside the court within the 2 hours then I believe this is a crime against the development of the players and our sport. You can do a perfect warming up on court with a racket and shuttle, this way you get 20 min more badminton time (this is 17% of all the badminton time you have in a club). Why should we do running/jogging training before we play badminton? Do runners have to play badminton before they can start running? No they don't, so why should we not start with playing badminton and if you really want to do something else before your training then you can come 20 min early and do your own warming up.

To do group training is already not very good but to do group training with pri set patons like, High serv, clear, drop, net drop, lob and back to clear again is useless training and should not be a part of daily training at all. Most club trainings on a good level in Denmark are done with different things on several courts, where double players doing something else than single players and girls doing other stuff than boys. The coach is a consultant going around between all courts correcting and giving advice, not like in most clubs only telling when to start, stop and change. This type of training is not easy if you don’t make players profiles of your players and a developing plan, this is also something that is not done in most clubs. I hear many times coaches say “I don’t have time to do this” well to do this will save you time, OK it is an investment to start with it but after you have the profile and the development plan it will save you time every training because everyone knows what to do and where to work on and you can be a consultant in the training making notes that you put in the data sheet of every player. You keep a file of every player and you can read back when problem showed up, what you said and done about it and the progress of the development. It will make your life very easy and you always have arguments and documentation when talking with your players. In practise I see only a few coaches doing this type of work, most of them just come to the hall do a pri set training and go home …………...Job done for today.
